Mathematics: Databases
Finding Articles
Databases are the first place you want to look for articles. Databases usually have information about an article (such as the title, author, name of the journal or magazine the article appeared in) and sometimes they will also contain an abstract, or summary, of the article.
Databases also often have information about other types of resources too - sometimes they contain information about books, book chapters, government documents, and other things.
Some databases will also have the articles themselves (called the full text of the article). When that happens, you should see a link to an HTML or PDF document. If you do not see a link, click on - this will check the other library databases for the full text of the article.
Math and Science Databases
-
MathSciNet This link opens in a new windowUse this database to explore contributions to mathematical research from 1940 to the present. MathSciNet contains summaries of articles and reviews of books gathered from publications of the American Mathematical Society.
-
JSTOR This link opens in a new windowJSTOR is a multi-disciplinary database, but has some scholarly literature in mathematics and statistics. Be warned, though - JSTOR is a retrospective archive, and does not contain articles published in the last 5 years.
-
Web of Science This link opens in a new windowThis is a great multi-disciplinary database. It tells you what other authors have cited an article, which can make it easier to find important or similar articles on your topic
-
arXiv: MathematicsarXiv is an e-print service, meaning that scholars have submitted their research papers to this site. This site contains papers on a variety of topics within mathematics.
Other useful databases
You might also find these databases useful. Some of these databases just contain article information and abstracts, so you will likely need to make use of the button.
-
SpringerLink This link opens in a new windowThrough Springer, the library has full text access to over 100 journals in mathematics, statistics, probability theory, stochastic processes, and more.
-
Wiley Online Library This link opens in a new windowThis database contains the full-text of about 50 journals in mathematics and statistics.
