Anti-Racism
Definitions
White Supremacy- The belief that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race, and should therefore dominate society. This goes further than being part of a white supremacist group. It is steeped into the workplace, schools, curriculum, medicine, the arts, etc. It is "othering" non-white civilizations, customs, and innovations as subpar to white ones. We should all aim to dismantle and de-colonize our spaces.
Chattel Slavery- A person is enslaved when a slaver, by means of physical restraint or threat, has forced, coerced, or intimidated him or her into unwilling work. In chattel slavery, the enslaved person is legally rendered the personal property (chattel) of the slave owner. In this context, it refers to peoples of largely West Africa being taken by force from their land and transported to the Americas to use their labor for profit.
Colorism- is a form of prejudice or discrimination usually from members of the same race in which people are treated differently based on the social implications from cultural meanings attached to skin color. Colorism isn't exclusive to just white people; Black and Latinx communities are perpetrators as well.
Antiracism- the policy or practice of opposing racism and promoting racial equality in all sectors of life. Declaring that you are not racist does not exclude you from racism. We must ALL be proactive in our own education and not fall prey to inaction.
Colonization- the terrorism of taking Indigenous nations and resources, annihilating their ways of knowing, assassinating, enslaving, and “reeducating” peoples.
Decolonization- recovering and cultivating the cultural, socio-economic, political, and/or spiritual knowledge and ways of being following the colonization; changing the “reality” imposed by colonizers.
