COVID-19 and the Black community
- CDC's Statistics of COVID-19 by raceThe Black population of the United States is being decimated at a higher rate than their white counterparts. Cases of COVID-19 are 2.6 times higher, hospitalization rates are 4.7 times higher, and death rates for COVID-19 are 2.1 times higher. Access to healthcare services for the Black population are disparately unequitable. Poor access leads to these rates, as well as poverty levels. This is all an interconnected system traced back to white supremacy and racism.
- Racism, Inequality, and Health Care for African Americans by The Century FoundationThis report showcases in detail the healthcare disparity in the Black community. The lack of equitable access to healthcare and medical professionals is leading to the death of Black Americans. Southern states with large amounts of Black Americans have unilaterally rejected the Medicaid expansion, leaving many low-income people without a safety line. The maternal mortality rate is over 3 times higher for Black women in comparison to white women, and infant mortality rate is over 2 times higher.
- Assessing differential impacts of COVID-19 on black communitiesScholarly article from the journal Annals of Epidemiology that contains data about the pandemic and its effect on the Black population.
Rates of HIV/AIDS
- CDC's Statistics of HIV in the Black communityCDC's data that showcases the disproportionate rates of HIV among Black men, particularly Black gay and bisexual men. Stigma and homophobia plays a huge role in this rate, as well as lack of access to health care, and lack of proper sexual education.
- CDC's HIV Resource LibraryHere you will find a wealth of resources; fact sheets, videos, HIV service locators, infographics, pocket guides, hotlines and referral services, and more.
Food Insecurity & Food Deserts
- Food Empowerment Project"Food deserts can be described as geographic areas where residents’ access to affordable, healthy food options (especially fresh fruits and vegetables) is restricted or nonexistent due to the absence of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance."
- Examining the Impact of Structural Racism on Food Insecurity: Implications for Addressing Racial/Ethnic DisparitiesFood insecurity and food deserts are problems that plague low-income communities, and black communities disproportionally. Living in areas with poor transportation to a grocery store or other fresh food location is a factor. Moreover, unequal job opportunities and unstable housing lead to food insecurity. These are sadly consequences of systemic racism.
- Living in Food Deserts and Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Cardiovascular DiseaseThe health adversities that food insecurity can bring are impactful and difficult to live with. Poor cardiovascular health and Type 2 Diabetes are correlated with poor access to nutritious, fairly-priced, and accessible food.
Black Mental Health Matters
- Double Jeopardy: COVID-19 and Behavioral Health Disparities for Black and Latino Communities in the U.SPoor physical health is not the only enemy in the Black community; mental and behavioral health access is grossly lacking as well. This report by SAMHSA showcases the growing need for mental healthcare during the pandemic.
