All of Us Data Research Workbench : Getting Started in All of Us
Getting Started with All of Us Data
You can access the Public Tier of All of Us data at any time, with no login or approval required!
- Data SnapshotsFor a quick look at the All of Us data, check out the Data Snapshots. These snapshots provide information on the participants enrolled in All of Us.
- Data BrowserFor more aggregated and anonymized health data, check out the Data Browser. This includes information gathered from surveys, wearable health devices, and Electronic Health Records. Click the link to explore, or check out the tutorial below to learn more.
Registered and Controlled Tiers
Please note that there are steps to take with GVSU’s Office of Research Compliance and Integrity (ORCI) and with All of Us. (each user will need to complete these steps, including any students working with the database): GVSU-specific instructions Reach out to Benjamin Vesper, Director, ORCI, at vesperb@gvsu.edu. Plan to send ORCI a copy of the research plan you submit to All of Us to confirm that IRB approval will not be needed. You will receive additional instructions via email from ORCI. All of Us-specific instructions
Step 1: Create a Researcher Workbench Account
Start by going to https://www.researchallofus.org/register/ to read through the registration steps. This page will suggest that you verify your institution has a Data Use and Registration Agreement (DURA) in place. GVSU does have a DURA in place which requires users to sign individual agreements before they can access the Registered and Controlled Tiers of the All of Us Data. You can scroll to the bottom of the page linked and click "Create an Account."
Now you can fill out your researcher profile. You may be asked for an "Institutional signing official." Currently at GVSU, that person is Dr. Robert Smart, the Executive Director of the Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence.
Once you've completed this profile, you'll be asked to sign the Terms of Service and agree to the Privacy Policy.
Step 2: Verify your Identity using login.gov or id.me
Before you can use the data, you need to verify your identity. All of Us provides two options for verification: login.gov or id.me. Researchers who live in the United States, have a social security number (SSN), and have a valid U.S. government-issued ID (e.g., U.S. territory- or state-issued ID) can use login.gov for identity verification. Otherwise, you must use ID.me.
To learn more about these options and how to verify your identity, check out this All of Us support page on Identity Verification.
Step 3: Complete the Responsible Conduct of Research Training
The mandatory Responsible Conduct of Research Training provides education on conducting responsible and ethical research with data from All of Us participants. You can read a summary of the mandatory training on the All of Us support page on Responsible Conduct of Research Training.
Step 4: Sign the Data User Code of Conduct
The Data User Code of Conduct is an agreement that outlines the program's expectations for researchers. You can learn more and read the Code of Conduct at any time on the All of Us Data Use Code of Conduct webpage.
