Getting started
Search the Library for Books, etc.
Use your keyword(s) in the search box:
Start with Advanced Search if you know you want to limit to just books, or any other specific format type.
Finding Articles
Databases are the first place you want to look for articles. Databases usually have information about an article (such as the title, author, name of the journal or magazine the article appeared in) and sometimes they will also contain an abstract, or summary, of the article.
Databases also often have information about other types of resources too - sometimes they contain information about books, book chapters, government documents, and other things.
Some databases will also have the articles themselves (called the full text of the article). When that happens, you should see a link to an HTML or PDF document. If you do not see a link, click on - this will check the other library databases for the full text of the article.
Math and Science Databases
- MathSciNetUse this database to explore contributions to mathematical research from 1940 to the present. MathSciNet contains summaries of articles and reviews of books gathered from publications of the American Mathematical Society.
- JSTORJSTOR provides the searchable full text of the backfiles of many of the core research and academic society published journals in almost all subject areas, but its emphasis is in the humanities and social sciences. The majority of JSTOR's content is academic and peer-reviewed.
Artstor content will be migrated to JSTOR prior to the site's retirement on August 1st, 2023. - Web of ScienceWeb of Science is a multidisciplinary resource that allows you to search multiple databases at once, including: Web of Science (Core Collection), Current Contents Connect, BIOSIS Previews, MEDLINE, and Journal Citation Reports. Find journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and tables of contents.
- arXiv: MathematicsarXiv is an e-print service, meaning that scholars have submitted their research papers to this site. This site contains papers on a variety of topics within mathematics.
Other useful databases
You might also find these databases useful. Some of these databases just contain article information and abstracts, so you will likely need to make use of the button.
- SpringerLinkSpringerLink allows Grand Valley users full-text access to over 1,500 journals in subjects including science, technology, humanities and law. Search the SpringerLink database or within subject collections or by publication type (which includes journal articles, reference entries, and books).
- Wiley Online Libraryfind full text articles and other information about various topics, especially medicine, science, and technology
