Graphic Novels and Comics: FINDING COMICS
In GVSU Libraries
GVSU does not shelf all its comics (and books about comics) in one location in the library, so finding them can require a little bit of searching. If you are browsing in person, you can search by Call Number (the letter/number code on the spines of all our books) - specifically, look among those starting with PN67... and NC1... on the third floor of Mary Idema Pew. Other collections where you'll find comics include the MIP Curriculum Collection, the Curriculum Materials Collection in Devos, and the MIP Juvenile/Young Adult section on the fourth floor. For searching online, try some of these Subject Headings (official categories used by the library system):
- "Graphic novels"
- "Comic books, strips, etc."
- Authorship, Bibliography, Books and reading, Cartooning/Cartoonists, Computer Programs, Criticism Textual, Cross cultural studies, Economics, Encyclopedias, History and criticism, In Education, Juvenile Fiction, Libraries Special Collections, Marketing, Moral and ethical aspects, Psychological aspects, Religious aspects, Social aspects, Study and teaching, Technique
- content (Families, War, African Americans, etc.)
- countries (France, Japan, United States, etc.)
- names (authors - Bechdel; fictitious character - Batman)
- "Comic strip characters in motion pictures"
- "Newspaper Sections, columns, etc. Comics"
- "Underground comic books, strips, etc."
Remember, if you can't find what you want at GVSU, you can request a title from another library through Document Delivery.
