What is Ethnographic Research?
"An ethnography is a descriptive account of social life and culture in a particular social system based on detailed observations of what people actually do. It is a research method most closely associated with anthropological studies of tribal societies, but it also used by sociologists, especially in relation to groups, organizations and communities that are part of larger and more complex societies such as hospitals, ethnic neighborhoods, urban gangs, or religious cults."
-definition from the Blackwell Dictionary of Sociology.

Decolonizing Ethnography by
ISBN: 9781478003953Publication Date: 2019-05-10In 'Decolonizing Ethnography' the four coauthors offer a methodological and theoretical reassessment of social science research, showing how it can function as a vehicle for activism and as a tool for marginalized people to theorize their lives. Tacking between personal narratives, ethnographic field notes, an original bilingual play about workers' rights, and examinations of anthropology as a discipline, the coauthors show how the participation of Mijangos Garcia and Lopez Juarez transformed the project's activist and academic dimensions. In so doing, they offer a guide for those wishing to expand the potential of ethnography to serve as a means for social transformation and decolonization.New Directions in Educational Ethnography by
ISBN: 9781784416249Publication Date: 2016-12-22Volume 13 relaunches the book series after a 9-year hiatus and addresses new directions in the field of educational ethnography. The authors in the book share methodological similarities, but their applications, contexts, treatments, and contributions to the field as evidenced here are unique and vary considerably. The diversity of views and perspectives of ethnographic theory and method in educational settings are on full display, from the street to urban and suburban classrooms and to college settings, where gender, race, class, and power dynamics impact learners, teachers, parents, and communities. Taken together, the chapters reinvigorate and redirect a new set of possibilities and opportunities in ethnographic research, while highlighting shifts, problems and new directions for the field.White Bound by
ISBN: 9780804776943Publication Date: 2012-08-22Matthew Hughey spent over a year attending the meetings, reading the literature, and interviewing members of two white organizations—a white nationalist group and a white antiracist group. Though he found immediate political differences, he observed surprising similarities. Both groups make meaning of whiteness through a reliance on similar racist and reactionary stories and worldviews. On the whole, this book puts abstract beliefs and theoretical projection about the supposed fracturing of whiteness into relief against the realities of two groups never before directly compared with this much breadth and depth. By examining the similarities and differences between seemingly antithetical white groups, we see not just the many ways of being white, but how these actors make meaning of whiteness in ways that collectively reproduce both white identity and, ultimately, white supremacy.Handbook of Ethnography by
ISBN: 9780761958246Publication Date: 2001-03-22`This wonderful Handbook establishes the central, and complex place ethnography now occupies in the human disciplines. All future work will begin here. This Handbook will soon become required reading for all scholars and graduate students who wish to be knowledgeable in this complex field of inquiry. This is a stunning accomplishment. The field owes the editors and their contributors a major debt of thanks' - Norman K Denzin, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign`A marvellous achievement! The Handbook has all the marks of a winner - compelling writing, comprehensive coverage and very useful discussions. This is a real benchmark for ethnography. It will set the background for debate and point to ne
